Amrit Pal Singh

Toy Faces is a collection of portraits by Amrit Pal Singh driven by nostalgia and childlike wonder. Toys are objects reminiscent of an extraordinary limitless time when the word cynical wasn't part of our vocabulary. The collection celebrates individuals and characters throughout history and fictional stories to remind us of our first avenues of inspiration, and reinstill the feelings of experiencing complex worlds for the first time. Some are still our heroes, and some don't seem that impressive anymore, but for a moment, they all push us to do better. For Singh, Toy Faces is about revisiting that feeling.
Over the last two years, Singh has created several Toy Faces, playing with its signature bear ears, button eyes and pinocchio nose with several characters and avatars on an open canvas.
For the Asian Paints Art House, in collaboration with the Mumbai Urban Art Festival, Singh has extended the ToyFace NFT to five individual artists, taking inspiration from the Asian Paints Colour of The Year — Silver Escapade. The result is a playful collaboration celebrating the spirit of our youth, while incorporating various styles and mediums. These NFTs will be minted over the course of the year, and will be listed on OpenSea for sale.

GRIN Toy face

Collaboration Artist: Santanu Hazarika (b.1992, Guwahati)

Grin Toy Face is a spin on the childhood trope of the monster under the bed. It is a visual representation of the mixed feelings of childhood fear, bravery and stories that come alive through oral traditions, books and films. Its silvery dark body inspired by Asian Paints Colour of The Year, plays on the trope of the bogeyman, consumed by the spirit of bravery and caution. The facial expressions and the fluidic formless shapes illustrated by Hazarika are symbolic of his style and mode of expression. As he creates a sense of eerie wonder and mystery, he also encourages us to ‘look under the bed’.

‘Voice of the Street’ Toy face

Collaboration Artist: ZERO (b. 1990, Gujarat)

“Don't let the stigma of graffiti keep you from using it as a tool of expression.”

By using the power of street art and messages, ZEROs Toyface aims to create tangible, and positive forms of expression. Voice of the Street is a toyface that places the act of mark making, on the toyface canvas. Integrating a language that is symbolic of our youth, of expression, of drawing ‘hearts’ on facades, and scribbling our names to make our presence known, ZERO transforms the act of rebelliousness and vandalism, into an important vocal medium for messages and expressions of ideas.
